the notion of space

The notion of space regains fresh momentum every time we interact with the world around us. As mobile devices weave into the fabric of everyday life, we are no longer confined to a specific location, time and place in accessing and interacting with communications technologies. Interfaces become more adaptable and fluid according to the user’s needs; capable of switching seamlessly between augmented, real and virtual information and communication techniques and practices.

conference week

Future Learning Spaces, the 7th annual Designs on E-learning 2011 conference, isbeing held at Aalto University in Helsinki. Finland on September 27 – 30, 2011.

Looking down Hameentie

The conference takes place at TAIK, Aalto University’s school of Art and Design. If you arrive from the centre of the city you will see the Arabia pottery chimney ahead of you. The tram turns right, you get off, walk back about five metres, look to your right, and spot the chimney.

You should walk down past the chimney and three minutes later, on your right, you will see the glass doors to TAIK. Walk through and there, straight ahead, is an art exhibition that marks the beginning of the conference space.

On Tuesday Mauri Ylä-Kotola will analyse institutional spaces.

On Wednesday Michel Bauwens will visualise networked spaces.

On Thursday Stephanie Rothenberg will be exploring open experimental spaces.

On Friday Ben Betts will envisage social spaces for dialog and debate.

These sessions, and the open panel discussions will be streamed live over the web. You can see them from here.

The format of the conference is designed to break through existing conventions. You will find more details of the conference themes in the programme, and details of the speakers here.

after hours

The conference will be end each afternoon at approximately 16:00, after which there will be activities and also plenty of time for mingling and exploring Helsinki.

On Tuesday, to kickstart this process Kati Åberg will offer a guided tour of the centre of the city in the form of an adventurous tram ride back from TAIK to your hotels, and then back again to Dylan for dinner.

The conference dinner is at 20:00 at Dylan, a local restaurant with an excellent reputation. It is literally three minutes walk from the conference.

On Wednesday evening there will be a live performance led by Salvatore Iaconesi and entitled A Third Augmented Landscape.

On Thursday it is open night, and there will be space for anyone who wants to hold a demonstration or make an impromptu presentation. This is a barcamp-style event where we hope some people might propose ideas that will live on after the conference ends.
